Happy 30th birthday to Marshal, our pointed cabbage, that took over the market with its freshness.
At Hazera, our passion for innovation and dedication to growers drive us to create vegetable varieties that nourish communities and support a resilient food system. The journey of Marshal, our game-changing pointed cabbage, is a testament to that commitment.
It all began with Duchy, the first pointed cabbage variety to make a significant impact in Western Europe. Developed under Nickerson-Zwaan, now part of the Hazera family, Duchy won hearts with its unique shape and naturally sweet taste, earning the beloved name “sweetheart cabbage.”
Growers saw potential in extending Duchy’s availability and began storing it in cold storage facilities, successfully prolonging the season by six weeks. This inspired the need for an even more storage-friendly variety—one that could maintain exceptional quality over time. That’s where Marshal came in.
Marshal was specifically developed to redefine storability. Unlike other varieties, it retains its premium quality after storage, featuring fewer yellow leaves, firmer texture, and no black pepper spots. This breakthrough led to the creation of a new market segment: pointed cabbage designed for extended storage without compromising freshness or taste.
Our partners in the Netherlands further elevated Marshal’s success by implementing Controlled Atmosphere storage, limiting the oxygen in the storeroom and flow packing techniques, ensuring an even longer shelf life. These advancements made Marshal the go-to choice for retailers, who value both consistency and quality.
“Marshal shines after Controlled Atmosphere storage; the lack of deterioration after opening the storeroom is exceptional. Unlike other varieties that may show signs of wilting, yellowing, or loss of texture, Marshal retains its fresh appearance, firm structure, and sweet taste even after extended storage.” – Maarten Danenberg, Product Manager Cabbage and Brussels Sprouts
Duchy set the stage, and Marshal solidified Hazera’s legacy in the pointed cabbage market. With the addition of Earl and Baron—varieties offering enhanced plant health and field performance—our portfolio continues to grow, providing solutions tailored to the needs of diverse markets.
